Converting System From RAID or IDE Mode to AHCI

Converting System From RAID or IDE Mode to AHCI

Also see this KB article: Disabling Secure Boot

If you are currently running Windows in RAID mode, and you switch the setting to AHCI, you will likely be unable to boot Windows.  You can either reinstall Windows, or use the method below to convert a running system to AHCI:

1. Open an Administrator Command Prompt or Administrator PowerShell window.
2. Type: bcdedit /set safeboot minimal
Note: If the above command does not work type: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
This will set Windows to enter Safe Mode on next boot.
3. Type: shutdown /r /fw /t 0
This will reboot the system and automatically go into the BIOS settings.
4. Change the SATA mode from RAID or IDE to AHCI.
Note: If your motherboard allows NVMe RAID in AHCI mode, make sure it is disabled.
Consult your system documentation for instructions to change these settings.
5. Exit Saving changes.  The system will now boot into Safe Mode.
6. Open an Administrator Command Prompt or Administrator PowerShell window.
7. Type: bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot
Note: If the above command does not work type: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
8. Reboot the system and it should load Windows normally.

If for some reason this method doesn't work for you, you should be able to switch your setting back to RAID and boot normally.
